EDUC 298: Language, Culture, Immigration & Music in Bali
DAILY JOURNAL
You will keep a daily journal during your trip to Bali. In this journal you will need to write about your experiences in relation to the readings on language, culture, immigration, and music.
Part 1: Each day you will be assigned a reading that you will respond to. Write a few paragraphs about the poignant parts of the article and how it relates to your experiences. Start making larger connections to future classroom settings and teaching and learning in the US.
Part 2: Each day you will experience something unique in Bali. Write a page or two about this experience. Use the following prompts to help guide your writing:
When we are attending the Bali Arts Festival:
What did you see? What did it smell like? What did it sound like? What did it feel like? Was it different than what you expected?
When we are preparing for the arts festival performance, learning new musics in Ubud, and preparing for our performance in Banjar Wani:
What was it like to learn in this environment? How is the teaching process similar or different? Describe a frustrating moment. Describe a moment of success. What did you need as a student that you didn’t get? How are you learning? Are you using codeswitching? Is the teacher code-switching? Are you using your classmates? Are they using you?
When we are in Kedwatan and Banjar Wani:
What was it like to hang out at the warung? What was school like? How do people socialize? How do people communicate, i.e., greet or leave one another? What was the market like? What was the post office like? What was it like to order food from a local vendor? What was it like to live in this environment?
NPR-ESQUE INVESTIGATIVE PODCAST
For this assignment, you will need a recording device. This can be an mp3 player that records, a smart phone, tablet, or field microphone. One Zoom H2 Field Recorder will be available during the trip to share. You can borrow this recording device from time to time, though with 13 people, you may want to use one on your smartphone or get a cheap one at RadioShack. If you so choose to borrow the recorder from me, you will need to buy a 4 or 8GB SD card and a pack of AA batteries. You will do a journalism podcast project similar to stories found on NPR. You will need to capture sounds related to your story...examples include sounds of the markets, a rehearsal, school life, night insects, hanging out at the warung (local deli), etc. You should find a topic surrounding language, culture, immigration, and/or music. Consider questions like, How does one learn Balinese as a non-native? What is the impact of globalization on the education system in Bali? Here is an example to listen to online before you go.

PHOTO VOICE EXHIBIT
You will embark on an "In Our Village" photo voice project. You must look through these websites in their fullest to get an idea of the assignment you will do while in Bali.
You will need a digital camera for this assignment—preferably one with a screen so the Balinese youth and you can choose the photos together on the spot. If you plan to use the camera on your phone, please have a way to share this with me.
On this link you will learn how to participate in this project. Here's the short version.
We will:
PERFORMANCE
You will perform gamelan angklung at the Bali Arts Festival. You are expected to prepare the music fully before arriving in Bali. I Ketut Gede Asnawa and his friends will help prepare us over the ten days leading up to our performance on July 1. You are expected to work hard and remain focused and engaged throughout our preparation period. Additionally, we will present a performance of gong kebyar, kecak and dance at the wantilan in Banjar Wani at the end of our tour. Wayan Dedik Rachman and his wife, Ketut, as well as Dewa Sakura from Cudamani will prepare us during our time in Kedewatan and I Nyoman Suadin and members of the gamelan in Banjar Wani will assist us when we arrive in Kerambitan. These performances will be used as assessments of your learning of the various musical practices we have engaged with during our time in Bali.

We will:
- Learn the process of gathering collective voices.
- Design the focus, themes, and structure of an art show.
- Invite participation by youth as a collaboration.
- Ask the youth to show us their daily lives, walk with them and give them access to our cameras to take their own pictures.
- Engage in ethnography by using active listening, asking probing or followup questions, and taking notes and recording our interviews.
- Work with the youth to choose the best photos and then ask them to share stories. I will work at getting translators for those who do not speak English well. This way we can share their stories as accurately as possible.
- Make cross-curricular connections and consider how the art show can accentuate and integrate subjects related to our course, i.e, things like, language, immigration, culture, music.
- Include a description of our process, what we learned through this process. We will share our group’s story in a slide show presentation at our final performance and curate a digital presentation of this material that can live on the cupola.
